OK, we are getting down to the wire. I used a cardboard
template to cutout the hole for the spinnaker snout. I also
cut out the raised area for the stock fuhler system. I
removed the bow eye, had looked at replacing it at the
front of the boat. but will probably just keep it's current
position. Due to the length of the legs of the bolts, I had
to cut them off to get it out.
I used 5/8" treated plywood cut like a triangle under the bow eye, and ran 2 strips of wood down the sides of the opening to support the spinnaker snout. I had tried to cut this out of a single piece, but had trouble getting it to set.
To support the fore stay I used a 2 X 6 pieve of treated lumber. I screwed it in using stainless steel screws and a washer. I had to be careful lining up the screws since the angle of the bow can make it easy to miss the support board. I then fiber glassed the 2 X 6 into place.
I used thinner pieces of wood to build up to the deck from the support 2x6 so that the deck would be solid when the fuhler mount was placed. The small hole that was cut out for the bump where the old roller jib base was, was filled in with a base of fiberglass, and then covered in gel coat.
Inside view of 2x6 before fiberglass.
Clamps and glue. Note above the S and the 3 on the registration numbers the screws used to support the 2 x 6. I did use a clear silicone to seal the holes.
Harkin Fuhler installed. I attached it to a bow plate which was secured into the new under deck support via stainless steel wood screws.
Done. Snout just slipped into the hole with a bit a trimming, and screwed into place. Grommets were placed on the base screws so a vinyl cover could be snapped into place. White caulk around the edges. I'll have to pull the snout again when I install a spinnaker sock
