Mast Step:  4.22.06
I think the hardest thing I did was cut the mast to raise the mast step. I was surprised how easy it was using just a hack saw. After the cut I filed the edges.
Marking the mast for the pin was a bit more of a pain. I measured 4 times, and after the drilling was done I was off about 5 degrees. I hope I can counter with mounting the mast base, so that the mast is square with the keel line.
I made a cardboard template to find the fit for the raised mast step. The area is not
exactly square, and is rounded towards the front. I wanted to have this piece snug in the mast well.
Template on the wood. Piece is a just under 3/4 inch piece of maple. When mounted I also cut out a 1/16" piece of Aluminum as a back plate.
Base piece secured in. 2 screws on each side. I'm using all stainless steel. I'm guessing I cut the mast off a bit high. Harry's guide said about 6" from the deck.  I
think there should be more than enough support. I did leave the pin in the deck at
the base of the well, and just put the mast segment into that.
2008 Update- The base wood piece that the mast step was mounted to split. I'm not sure if I used the wrong wood or didn't have the grain the right way. So I made the base piece, and covered it in fiberglass mesh, and then covered with thin sheet aluminum. I had not further issues during the '08 and '09 seasons.
